SAFE COP SUPPORT SERVICES FOR DISABLED AND SLAIN OFFICERS: ECUADORAN POLICE CORPORAL ANGELICA BORJA

In February 2012, the NPDF traveled to Quito, Ecuador to attend a police conference and learned about the plight of Police Corporal Angelica Borja who had been the victim of a line of duty “hit & run” accident that resulted in the amputation of her leg. At the request of the Commanding General, the NPDF convinced the US Consul General in August 2012 to issue an emergency medical visa for Corporal Borja. The NPDF had arranged for the officer to receive a donated prosthetic limb and agreed to pay for her air transportation, lodging and related per-diem. In September 2012, the NPDF personally transported Corporal Borja to the “Scott Sabolich Prosthetics & Research Center” in Oklahoma City wherein she received her prosthetic leg. A month later, Corporal Borja could walk on her own to receive a “Valor Award” at the 2012 State Troopers Coalition Awards Dinner. She returned to active duty as a police officer.
