SAFE COP REWARD PAYMENTS: ORANGE POLICE OFFICER JOYCE CARNEGIE

In 1999, the “Safe Cop” reward was similarly credited for the arrest and conviction of the suspect who killed Orange (NJ) Police Officer Joyce Carnegie who was the first African-American female officer killed in New Jersey. Officer Carnegie had been shot and killed by an armed robbery suspect who she stopped for questioning. The suspect had just committed two muggings in the area minutes before and was walking toward Officer Carnegie when she stopped him. As she approached the suspect, he drew his weapon and shot her before she had time to draw her own weapon. Although Officer Carnegie was wearing a vest, she was shot in the head and abdomen. On June 30, 1999, the suspect pled guilty and was sentenced to life in prison.
